The Formula 1 races, first held in Baku in 2017, have become a tradition. The Baku City Circuit has already announced the program for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix of Formula 1, which will take place from September 13 to 15, marking the eighth time Baku has hosted the event.
The circuit features a unique combination of open, narrow, and steep turns. This track is considered the fastest and most unpredictable among other cities that have hosted similar events. Running alongside the Icherisheher, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the famous Seaside Boulevard, the circuit is a favourite spot for motorsport enthusiasts.
Surprises for Fans
The upcoming Formula 1 tournament will be accompanied by live concerts and performances by global stars. On September 13, renowned American actor and musician Will Smith will take the stage at Baku Crystal Hall. That same day, Black Coffee, one of the most prominent figures in global electronic music and a Grammy award winner, will also perform. On September 14, J Balvin—a superstar with multiple music awards, including a Latin Grammy—will present his new program at this concert complex.
As in previous years, there will be a fan forum on the Seaside Boulevard in the fan zone. Here, world-famous Formula 1 drivers will meet with motorsport enthusiasts during a special session. For 20 minutes allocated for each team, fans will have the opportunity to ask questions to the Formula stars, get their autographs, and take photos.
During the race days, the Formula 1 entertainment zone will feature various simulators, interactive activities, stage performances, and events. Rides along the pit lane (a section of the race track) are also one of the favourite activities for fans. These rides allow them to get acquainted with the pits of the competing teams.
This year's Azerbaijan Grand Prix will be memorable for record ticket sales and a significant increase in seating capacity for fans. By mid-August, tickets for most stands were nearly sold out. According to organisers, an increase in the number of foreign guests is expected compared to last year. Fans from over 100 countries have purchased tickets for the events in Baku. The top five countries include Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Britain, the US, the Netherlands, and India.
It is no secret that the Baku City Circuit is one of the most exciting tracks on the Formula 1 calendar. The length of the track is 6 km, with a total distance of 306 km. The Baku track, where safety is ensured at the highest level, is classified as one of the fastest. Its widest part measures 13 meters, while its narrowest section—around Icherisheher, including turns seven and eight—measures 7.6 meters.
Economic Impact
The Baku stage generates significant interest globally; its city circuit is distinctive in its nature. This is because the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, like those in Monte Carlo, Melbourne, Monaco, and Singapore, takes place on a city circuit. The Baku track—with its narrowest sections—poses a challenging test for drivers and is considered one of the fastest. High speeds, sharp turns, and tight spots demand exceptional skill. Known as the city of winds, Baku makes the race thrilling not only for the drivers but also for spectators.
Races in Azerbaijan attract a large number of guests, contributing to the country's tourism development. The press service of the Baku City Circuit reported that this prestigious event positively impacts Azerbaijan’s economy: "Overall, Formula 1 races positively influence our country's economic indicators, and this impact grows each year. For instance, this year we had record ticket sales, which means more tourists will visit our country, bringing additional benefits to the economy. Inbound tourists contribute to a wide range of service sectors—from hotels to restaurants—and allow for new job creation. Expenditures by foreign fans in hotels, restaurants, and other service areas significantly benefit the Azerbaijani economy. Local businesses experience growth in their operations by creating new jobs and generating substantial income. The economic effects of the Grand Prix support various sectors including tourism, hospitality, and retail, highlighting the role of this event in stimulating economic growth observed in Baku."
New Regulations for 2026
The International Automobile Federation has unveiled details of new regulations that will take effect at the Formula 1 World Championship starting in 2026. The dimensions and weight of cars will change. The cars will be shorter and more compact, with their weight reduced by 30 kg compared to current models. Furthermore, with the implementation of active aerodynamics, overtaking opportunities will be enhanced.
One of the most significant changes will involve increasing the power of the electric components in engines several times over. New engines will operate on eco-friendly fuel. These new rules could significantly alter the existing power balance since cars will need to be built almost from scratch.
