Architect Stasya Orlova-Stroganova is dedicated to preserving the history of Baku for future generations. Her family background is noteworthy; her grandfather, Rostislav Orlov-Stroganov, served as the deputy chief architect of Baku for an extended period, while her grandmother, Irena Orlov-Stroganova, co-authored renowned architectural projects in Azerbaijan. It is this rich heritage that likely contributes to the popularity of Stroganova's blog, Old New Baku. Not only does it offer professional analysis and insights but also reflects a deep connection to the city's history and a genuine love for its architecture instilled since childhood.

"How did you decide to showcase archival photos of Baku? Your blog differs from typical city exploration platforms by focusing on historical views of Baku and the architectural evolution of the capital."

"The idea to curate such content stemmed from my fascination with the history of my hometown. From a young age, I was captivated by this field and aspired to share my passion with a wider audience. My motivation for blogging about Baku's architectural history lies in my desire to safeguard it for future generations. In a rapidly evolving world, ancient structures are vulnerable to decay due to time and external factors. I believe that my blog serves a vital role in preserving the legacy of these architectural marvels. Moreover, I observed a dearth of high-quality content centred on old Baku and the architecture of the modernized capital. Many travel blogs focus on popular tourist attractions, overlooking lesser-known aspects of our capital's history. Thus, I chose a different path by delving into archive photos to unveil obscure facts about our city's past. What began as a personal passion evolved into a mission to enhance awareness of our architectural heritage, highlighting its distinct characteristics and the challenges we confront.

"During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, amid the second wave of the oil boom, Baku witnessed the construction of remarkable edifices that now constitute an integral part of its cultural heritage.

"However, in recent years, there has been a noticeable absence of new constructions that match the elegance and style of their predecessors. This raises questions about the underlying reasons for this shift.

"For instance, it is intriguing to ponder why patrons of the arts like Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, Musa Naghiyev, Shamsi Asadullayev, Aghabala Guliyev, and others managed to initiate the creation of architectural wonders that surpass contemporary efforts.

"The pivotal influence on the tastes of these visionaries was their travels to Europe, where they encountered the harmony and aesthetics of European architecture. Inspired by what they witnessed, they endeavoured to erect even more splendid structures in their homeland.

"Today, when erecting new buildings, simplicity and functionality often take precedence over intricate details and aesthetic allure."

"But why architecture? And what aspect does your blog primarily focus on - history, aesthetics, or critique?"

"Driven by a profound appreciation for Baku's architectural heritage and armed with professional expertise as an architect, I aim to share my insights, knowledge, and reflections on the city's extraordinary architectural landmarks with my audience. The name of my blog encapsulates its core theme - delving into both historical and contemporary architecture.

"I firmly believe that architecture transcends mere art; it permeates our surroundings and shapes our experiences. Buildings communicate through their design, evoking images and emotions. The study of architectural history is crucial not only for preserving unique remnants of the past but also for comprehending present-day architectural practices.

"Blogging about Baku's architectural legacy has become a wellspring of inspiration and education for me. I meticulously explore historical facades, scrutinise every intricate detail to view the city from a fresh perspective, and immerse myself in its essence. I aspire that my work ignites readers' curiosity in Baku's architecture and cultivates an appreciation for the beauty present in every structure they encounter, enabling them to perceive their surroundings through a new lens."

"It seems that you have a preference for the historical charm of pre-revolutionary and pre-war Baku over its modern counterpart. Is that an accurate assessment?"

"Indeed, it is fair to say that the old-world allure of pre-revolutionary and pre-war Baku resonates more with me than its contemporary transformation. Despite being a modernised hub boasting skyscrapers, contemporary architecture, and tourist attractions, the preserved essence and nostalgia of old Baku hold a special place in my heart.

"The amalgamation of Eastern and Western architectural styles in the pre-war and pre-revolutionary cityscape, characterised by narrow streets, intricate facades, spacious squares adorned with monuments, and majestic residences, creates a distinctive ambiance.

"Among the iconic symbols of old Baku stands Icherisheher (Old City), listed on the UNESCO World Heritage roster. It rightfully earns its reputation as one of the most enchanting and well-preserved medieval towns globally."

"Your collection of archive photos depicting Baku has surely been meticulously researched and analysed. As someone deeply invested in architecture, what distinguishes our city from others in the region or the Middle East?"

"Delving into the extensive archive of Baku's photographs unveils the city's unique and unparalleled allure. Baku exudes a distinct charm and allure, captivating with its individualistic flair. A defining trait that sets it apart from neighbouring cities is the harmonious blend of historical and contemporary elements. This fusion is evident not only in preserving ancient architectural marvels like Icherisheher or Maiden Tower but also in creating modern architectural landmarks such as the Heydar Aliyev Centre and Flame Tower. This distinctive amalgamation appeals to admirers of architecture.

"Another distinguishing factor that underscores Baku's uniqueness is its geographical setting and topography. Nestled along a spacious bay, the city welcomes refreshing sea breezes and natural light, complemented by expansive boulevards, picturesque cliffs, and verdant parks - elements uncommon in neighbouring locales.

"Moreover, Baku boasts a rich tapestry of architectural styles ranging from oriental palaces and mosques to avant-garde structures, each reflecting its respective era. This eclectic mix stems from centuries of cultural influences and marks the city as a testament to architectural evolution."

"Can Baku be classified strictly as an Eastern or European city?"

"Considering its historical evolution, Baku has traversed diverse phases of development marked by cultural influences from various civilisations, making it challenging to assign a definitive label. The city serves as a nexus where Eastern and European influences converge, creating a unique fusion of multiple cultures. Baku showcases artistic elements from the Byzantine, Persian, Ottoman, and Russian realms. Its modern and progressive lifestyle aligns it more closely with European metropolises, evident through its array of dining establishments, cafes, global brands, contemporary art venues, and exhibition spaces.

"Baku emerges as an unparalleled blend of Eastern and European cultural characteristics, embodying a harmonious coexistence of two worlds. The conventional binary classification of Oriental or European inadequately encapsulates Baku's multifaceted essence and exceptional ambiance. To truly appreciate its remarkable diversity, one must immerse oneself in the city's offerings."

"Have you ever felt surprised by the lack of awareness among tourists from former Soviet republics regarding our history, architecture, and culture as a whole? Do you perceive any sense of neglect amidst their focus on attractions like the Boulevard and Icherisheher?"

"It is indeed regrettable that there is a lack of opportunity to showcase Baku's history on an international platform. To address this gap, active development and promotion of relevant initiatives are essential.

"Baku boasts a rich historical legacy as an ancient cultural and commercial hub that has captured the admiration of numerous travellers and beauty enthusiasts. However, there remains a significant portion of the global population unaware of our city's offerings."

"What were your favourite childhood spots in Baku?"

"The winding pathways of the Old City, serving as a living museum of Azerbaijan's history, hold a vivid place in my reminiscence. The ancient stone walls guided me to iconic landmarks like the Maiden Tower, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, and Fountain Square. Amongst my cherished haunts was the Baku Boulevard, where cafes, tea houses, and amusement attractions enticed both locals and visitors alike."

"Do you believe all antiquities should be restored? Was there a time without kitsch or poor taste a century ago?"

"The debate over the restoration and preservation of antiquities sparks varied opinions and debates. Determining which structures warrant restoration versus demolition poses a challenge. It may come as a disappointment to some that certain historic edifices exhibit elements of kitsch or questionable taste. One might ponder whether these characteristics were prevalent in their historical context, possibly aligning with contemporary trends and preferences of the era. Taste and fashion evolve over time, rendering past styles sometimes perplexing to modern eyes.

"Nevertheless, when appraising ancient structures, their architectural significance on a historical scale must be acknowledged. Many historic buildings serve as exquisite masterpieces, reflecting distinct eras and design styles. Whether deemed positive or negative, these architectural legacies demand preservation for posterity.

"Hence, the decision to restore antiquities should hinge on a meticulous evaluation of each specific site, considering its architectural and artistic merits alongside its cultural and historical significance. While not every historic structure necessitates restoration, those with high value and restoration potential warrant special attention.

"Individual perceptions of beauty may vary, particularly concerning architectural artefacts. Yet, societal demands evolve. Imagining a contemporary business centre styled as an opera house illustrates this shift in architectural preferences. From opulent opera houses to functional and modern aesthetics, architectural trends adapt over time. These transformations signify an evolution in tastes and architectural expectations."

"In your view, what constitutes Baku's notable architectural achievements in the past 20-30 years? Conversely, what drawbacks have been observed?"

"Among Baku's notable architectural triumphs in recent decades stand the futuristic Heydar Aliyev Centre designed by the renowned architect Zaha Hadid, along with the Flame Towers - a monumental complex resembling flames. Another success story is the Baku Crystal Hall, blending elegance and innovation to become a hallmark of modern design.

"Equally impressive is the White City, showcasing European architectural symbols and contemporary designs, infusing a new vitality and potential into the urban landscape.

"While several architectural endeavours have garnered praise, some recent projects raise doubts and disappointment. Certain developments appear simplistic and fail to harmonise with existing structures. These incongruities disrupt unity and aesthetic balance within the cityscape.

"Furthermore, an inadequately planned approach to developing residential areas results in subpar transport infrastructure and inconvenience for residents. Issues like traffic congestion and limited parking facilities diminish citizens' quality of life.

"Despite notable architectural achievements in Baku over the past 20-30 years, critical evaluation is necessary for projects requiring a more meticulous urban development strategy."
