UFC Fight Night Baku is poised to mark a significant milestone in the development of Azerbaijani sport. This prestigious competition, scheduled for 27 June at the National Gymnastics Arena, is of great significance and offers much more than just a sporting event. The project is large-scale in scope, with the primary objectives including the strengthening of the country's international standing, the development of tourism and the promotion of sport among young people.
In the main event, Azerbaijani lightweight fighter Rafael Fiziyev will face Mexican Manuel Torres. Another highlight will be the middleweight bout between Sharabutdin Magomedov and Michel Pereira. This evening's event is generating significant interest among UFC enthusiasts. Rafael Fiziyev's entrance into the Octagon in his home city of Baku is considered to be of particular significance.
Another Azerbaijani lightweight, Nazim Sadikhov, will face Mateus Camilo. Sadikhov has participated in 14 bouts, achieving 11 victories and experiencing 2 defeats to date.
The Octagon show
The Baku event is known for its high calibre competition and consistently delivers bouts that meet the highest standards of excellence. The UFC management team has meticulously curated a comprehensive programme.
It is widely acknowledged that Rafael Fiziyev is one of the most formidable competitors in the lightweight division. His striking technique, honed in the Thai boxing tradition, is of a very high standard. Following a prolonged period of injury-related absence, this fight is of paramount importance to him. His opponent, Manuel Torres, is a young, aggressive Mexican fighter with devastating striking power. Holding the bout in Baku will provide Fiziyev with a significant psychological advantage, as the support of the home crowd can provide the fighter with extra motivation.
The bout between Sharabutdin Magomedov and Michel Pereira is poised to be the most notable contest of the evening. Both fighters are known for their ability to put on a spectacular show in the octagon. Pereira is renowned for his acrobatic moves and unexpected attacks, whilst Magomedov fights with greater composure and is renowned for the precision of his strikes. The winner of this clash will be well-positioned to secure the championship title in their weight class.
Azerbaijani fans are eagerly awaiting the performances of their country's fighters in the UFC. The participation of athletes such as Nazim Sadikhov and Farman Hasanov in the tournament is indicative of the development of the Azerbaijani school of mixed martial arts (MMA). Bouts against strong opponents from Brazil and the US provide our fighters with an excellent opportunity to strengthen their positions in the world's largest promotion.
No less than the top result
The fact that the Mexican Manuel Torres prefers to fight standing up is to Rafael Fiziyev's advantage. The fighter himself had this to say about the upcoming bout: UFC fights have been known to end in unexpected ways. My current opponent prefers to fight standing up, which is to my advantage. Despite the fact that the bout will take place in his home arena, our approach remains consistent, regardless of the venue. My goal is to achieve the best possible result. I am always focused on my next opponent. I am grateful for the support I receive from Azerbaijanis around the world."
Azerbaijani MMA fighter Nazim Sadikhov confirmed that his preparation is proceeding according to plan: "Everything is proceeding excellently; I have made significant changes to my training regime. It is essential to maintain a forward-looking perspective. Following my loss in December, I am now fully focused on the upcoming bouts. The setback was due to accumulated fatigue. I consider myself to be a more formidable opponent than Mateus Camilo. "The Wolf" (Sadikhov's combat moniker, "Black Wolf") harbours his own secrets.
Azerbaijan’s image and sport
UFC tournaments generate significant revenue for the host cities, and Baku is no exception. Today, Azerbaijan is the only country in the region to host an event of such high calibre. This will result in thousands of wealthy fans from neighbouring countries, including Russia, Turkey, Georgia and Kazakhstan, travelling to Baku to witness this event.
The end of June is traditionally considered one of the busiest periods of the tourist season in Baku. The UFC event will generate significant revenue for the city's hotel, restaurant and transport sectors, which will be operating at full capacity.
Tickets are now on sale. Prices for the event range from ₼50 to ₼2,200, ensuring broad accessibility. The rapid sale of VIP tickets is a clear indication of the project's economic success and the high level of interest from international visitors.
It is important to acknowledge the significance of this tournament in promoting Azerbaijan's image. The evening's fights will be broadcast live to hundreds of countries around the world. It is estimated that the images of Baku's picturesque scenery and modern sports facilities will be seen by millions of viewers. This will help to strengthen Baku's reputation as one of the world's leading centres for hosting major sporting events, similar to Formula 1 races.
It is important to note that interest in sport, particularly combat sports, has always been very high in Azerbaijan. The opportunity to see local athletes compete live alongside world-class stars will serve as a powerful incentive for children and young people. Consequently, there is a strong possibility that the number of people wishing to take up sport will increase significantly.
UFC Fight Night Baku will be a significant sporting event for Azerbaijan, as well as a notable strategic achievement. The event's excellent organisation, strong line-up of competitors and huge public interest all point to it becoming a long-standing fixture in the sporting calendar. Baku is once again proving that it is capable of hosting the world’s biggest sporting events at the very highest level.
