Azerbaijan has become a symbol of architectural and construction development largely due to its commitment to modernity, sustainability and innovation. A focus on forward-looking strategies has fuelled the country's economic growth, making it a regional leader in architectural excellence. In his interview with R+, PhD. Babak NOSHIRVANI, CEO and leading specialist of one of Azerbaijan's major architectural firms, who authored many of Baku's landmark projects and solutions, examines the key factors that have contributed to Azerbaijan's remarkable progress in the industry. He highlights Azerbaijan's emphasis on modernisation, sustainability, water management and preservation of cultural values.

"What is the current situation in the architectural and construction sectors of Azerbaijan?"

"The effective use of technological advances in Azerbaijan has played a major role in this case. Azerbaijan's desire to remain at the forefront of technological progress has revolutionised the architectural and construction sectors. The integration of advanced technologies such as virtual and augmented reality and artificial intelligence has changed the design and construction processes. These innovations have enabled professionals to visualise projects more deeply, identify potential problems in advance and make informed decisions, resulting in improved project outcomes and reduced risk."

"What about sustainable development and minimising negative environmental impact?"

"That's a good question. Sustainability is a guiding principle. Today, Azerbaijan's commitment to sustainable development is particularly evident in its architectural and construction practices. The government has introduced green building standards and certification, energy efficient projects and the integration of renewable energy sources (RES). By prioritising sustainable construction, Azerbaijan aims to minimise environmental impact and create healthier and more comfortable living spaces. The emphasis on sustainable development also positions the country as an attractive destination for environmentally conscious investors and tourists."

"Can you name some examples of innovative design in the Azerbaijani architecture?"

"Certainly, the architectural landscape of Azerbaijan proves the use of innovative design concepts. Thanks to government support for ambitious and promising projects, it was possible to create iconic landmarks that challenge traditional architectural concepts. From the awesome Heydar Aliyev Centre to the iconic Flame Towers skyscrapers and the Crescent Development, these architectural marvels have attracted worldwide attention as a magnet for cultural tourism and economic growth. By encouraging architectural innovation, Azerbaijan is enabling designers to push boundaries and create mesmerising structures."

"What can be done to keep the bar high?"

"This requires the development of education and skills. Azerbaijan's investment in education and skills development is crucial for the development of the architecture and construction sectors. Incidentally, the country has already established world-class architectural and engineering training programmes, providing future professionals with comprehensive education and practical training. By nurturing local talent and providing them access to international best practices, Azerbaijan is developing a skilled workforce that can drive the continuous development of the industry. Ongoing professional development programmes help to upgrade the skills of industry professionals in line with the latest trends and technologies."

"As you know, Azerbaijan has limited water resources. This demands the rationally use of water. How is this factor taken into account in the architectural and construction sector?"

"Water management means sustainable infrastructure. Azerbaijan recognises the importance of effective water resources management in its architectural and construction development. The government is introducing innovative solutions and strategies to ensure efficient use and conservation of water resources. Advanced water recycling and rainwater harvesting systems are integrated into buildings, while the green infrastructure promotes natural water filtration and reduces rainwater runoff. By prioritising water management, Azerbaijan is creating a sustainable and environmentally friendly urban environment."

"Does the modern Azerbaijan maintain its cultural and architectural identity?"

"In fact, the emphasis on cultural identity is evident in everything. Keeping pace with modernity, Azerbaijan carefully preserves its rich cultural heritage. Architects and designers consciously integrate elements of Azerbaijani culture, art and traditional architecture into modern projects. This approach ensures a harmonious blend of old and new, honouring the country's heritage while at the same time utilising the possibilities of modern design. Furthermore, preserving Azerbaijan's cultural heritage in architectural and construction projects is of great economic importance. By incorporating traditional elements into modern designs, Azerbaijan creates a unique and authentic experience for visitors. Cultural tourism is becoming a driver of economic growth, benefiting local businesses, hotels, restaurants and the arts and crafts industry. Preserving cultural heritage also fosters a sense of pride among residents, helping to strengthen the social fabric and create a favourable environment for economic development."

"Can Azerbaijan position itself as a regional leader in architecture?"

"Undoubtedly. The development of architecture and construction in Azerbaijan demonstrates the country's unwavering commitment to modernity, sustainability, water management and cultural preservation. Through technological advancement, sustainable development, education and cultural heritage preservation, Azerbaijan has created a thriving industry that fuels economic growth, attracts foreign investment, creates employment opportunities and represents the country as a regional leader in architecture. This holistic approach ensures a sustainable and prosperous future for Azerbaijan by creating a sustainable, vivid and environmentally sound environment, stimulating economic development and improving the overall quality of life for citizens."

"Thank you!"
